New Year Challenge day 4: How to use long and short-term goals to optimize momentum

Having big picture dreams, short-term to do lists and medium-term milestones in between are all equally important for optimising momentum towards your goals.  The big dreams are for inspiration, motivation and joy! Many of us also find that day-to-day to do lists and schedules are helpful in helping us feel organised and to keep moving forward one step at a time.  But settling  some medium-term (weekly to 3 monthly) goals are also important for optimising progress. It’s possible to get bogged down in lots of tasks which theoretically should help move us closer to our goals but not all of those may be necessary.  Or we might spend longer than necessary on tasks.  Having a weekly or monthly target helps us to maintain the momentum to do what is necessary to reach those milestones.

Make your long, medium and short-term plans by answering the questions below.

  • What are your dreams for the next 5 years? Answer for as many areas of your life as you like eg. family, career, personal development, healthy, spiritual, hobbies, community etc).  Dream big.  You can always change these long term goals if you find they are no longer aligned with what you want but there is no harm in documenting them for yourself now.
  • Which of those long term dreams are the most important to you and that you definitely want to start working towards right away?
  • For the dreams that you are going to start working towards right away, what would you need to achieve in the next year to be on track to your 5-year goals?
  • What would you need to do in the next 3 months to be on target to reach your 1 year goals?
  • What are your goals for the next month?
  • What are your goals for the next week?
  • What are your top 3 priorities for tomorrow?  (Hopefully if you completed yesterday challenge tasks you have or about to have given time to your 3 top priorities today, so let’s keep this routine going…).

See you here tomorrow for Day 4…
